…president Tinubu assures President Mahama and all Ghanaians that the thoughts and prayers of the government and people of Nigeria are with them.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times| President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to President John Mahama, the government, and the people of Ghana following a devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two senior Ghanaian ministers and six others.

The ill-fated flight, which was carrying top government officials on official duty, ended in tragedy when it crashed in an undisclosed location, resulting in the deaths of Ghana’s Defence Minister, Edward Omane Boamah, and Environment Minister, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

According to reports from Ghanaian authorities and local media, the ministers and their team were on a national assignment at the time of the crash. The precise cause of the incident is still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest possible mechanical failure or adverse weather conditions.

The loss of two key cabinet members has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s political and administrative structure, with tributes pouring in from across the globe.

President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the incident as a “profound national loss” for Ghana and expressed solidarity on behalf of Nigeria.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extends his deepest condolences to President John Mahama, the government and people of Ghana following the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and six others,” the statement read.

President Tinubu emphasized that the people and government of Nigeria mourn alongside their West African neighbors during this painful period. He expressed particular sympathy to the bereaved families, urging them to take comfort in the knowledge that their loved ones died while rendering selfless service to the nation.

“President Tinubu assures President Mahama and all Ghanaians that the thoughts and prayers of the government and people of Nigeria are with them during this time of profound national loss,” the statement added.

This expression of solidarity reinforces the strong diplomatic and historical ties between Nigeria and Ghana, two of West Africa’s most prominent democracies.

Following the announcement of the tragedy, tributes and condolence messages have flooded in from African leaders, international partners, civil society groups, and diplomatic missions. The African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and the United Nations have also expressed sadness over the loss and called for a thorough investigation into the crash.

Ghana’s President, John Mahama, has declared a national day of mourning, and all flags have been ordered to fly at half-mast in honor of the fallen statesmen and their aides. Memorial services are expected to take place in Accra in the coming days.

The tragedy has reignited discussions around aviation safety standards in Africa, particularly for government-owned aircraft used in official capacities. Civil society organizations and safety experts have called for stricter maintenance regulations, better training for crew, and updated aircraft fleets to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In the wake of this loss, observers hope the tragedy will spark greater cooperation between African nations on aviation safety, crisis response, and disaster management.

President Tinubu’s swift response and warm expression of solidarity serve as a reminder of the deep-rooted ties between Nigeria and Ghana, two countries that have historically shared cultural, political, and economic bonds.

As both nations mourn the untimely deaths of dedicated public servants, the incident underscores the risks undertaken by government officials in the service of national development and the importance of regional unity in times of grief.
