JAMB data reveals score-based trends as over two million applicants competed for limited admission slots nationwide.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The iNews Times | UTME 2025 admission statistics released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board https://www.jamb.gov.ng show that 1,009,044 candidates gained admission out of 2,007,312 applicants who sought placement into Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The figures were unveiled at the 2026 National Policy Meeting on admission guidelines and cut-off marks, where policymakers, vice-chancellors and heads of institutions reviewed performance metrics and future benchmarks for admissions.

In this report, we examine the key developments, reactions from stakeholders, and the broader implications.

Background of the Story

The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination remains the primary gateway into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria. Each year, millions of candidates compete for limited spaces, with admission outcomes often reflecting institutional capacities, programme demand and approved cut-off marks.

The UTME 2025 admission statistics provide one of the most detailed breakdowns in recent years, offering insight into how performance bands translate into admission opportunities.

The data was presented during deliberations on the 2026 academic session, as authorities assessed trends and recalibrated policies to balance access and standards.

Key Developments

According to the figures released, a total of 2,007,312 candidates applied for admission in 2025, while 1,009,044 were successfully admitted, representing slightly over 50 per cent overall placement.

For Direct Entry candidates, 64,480 applied and 37,918 secured admission, representing a 59 per cent success rate.

Among candidates who scored 300 and above, 17,189 applied and 12,896 were admitted, translating to a 75 per cent admission rate the highest success band recorded.

In the 250–299 score range, 101,266 candidates applied, with 73,944 admitted, representing 73 per cent.

Candidates who scored between 200 and 249 recorded 452,838 applications, with 268,567 admissions, reflecting a 59 per cent success rate.

The largest pool of applicants fell within the 160–199 range, where 997,811 candidates applied and 494,544 were admitted, representing 50 per cent.

For the 140–159 band, 331,927 applied, with 113,049 admitted, accounting for 34 per cent.

In the 120–139 category, 39,204 applied and 7,821 gained admission, reflecting 20 per cent.

Candidates scoring between 100 and 119 recorded 2,597 applications, with 305 admitted, representing 12 per cent.

The UTME 2025 admission statistics clearly indicate that higher scores significantly improved admission prospects, particularly for candidates scoring 250 and above.

Reactions from Stakeholders

Education analysts say the figures reaffirm the competitive nature of Nigeria’s tertiary admission system.

A senior admissions officer who attended the policy meeting noted that while merit remains a strong determinant, institutional discretion and programme demand also shape final admission outcomes.

“The data confirms that strong performance enhances chances, but it also shows that opportunities still exist within moderate score bands, depending on institutional capacity,” the official said.

Some parents and candidates, however, argue that the figures reflect the persistent gap between application numbers and available admission spaces.

Implications

The UTME 2025 admission statistics underscore two key realities: first, that demand for tertiary education continues to outpace supply; and second, that performance thresholds remain decisive in competitive courses.

While admission rates exceeded 70 per cent for top score brackets, the bulk of admissions numerically occurred within the 160–199 band due to the sheer volume of applicants in that range.

This suggests that policy decisions on cut-off marks, institutional quotas and programme expansion will remain central to improving access without diluting academic standards.

The data also highlights ongoing disparities between highly competitive courses and less-subscribed programmes, a factor that continues to influence placement outcomes.

What Happens Next

With the 2026 admission cycle already under review, stakeholders are expected to rely heavily on the UTME 2025 admission statistics to shape new guidelines.

Decisions on minimum admissible scores, institutional autonomy and digital monitoring systems are likely to feature prominently in subsequent policy deliberations.

Education authorities are also expected to intensify efforts to expand infrastructure and diversify programme offerings to accommodate growing demand.

Conclusion

The UTME 2025 admission statistics paint a revealing picture of Nigeria’s evolving tertiary admission landscape competitive, performance-driven and still constrained by capacity limits.

As over one million candidates secured placement, another million remain outside the system, reinforcing the urgent need for strategic expansion and sustained reform in the education sector.
